Baby Soundabout Commusication 4 under 4's

Baby Soundabout helps families find ways of interacting and communicating with their disabled children through music and sound, which can form an invaluable basis for building their relationship. Thanks to three year funding from BBC Children in Need, Soundabout can now develop Baby Soundabout into 'Commusication 4 under 4's' sessions around Oxfordshire.

About 6 in every 1,000 babies are born each year with profound and sometimes life-limiting disabilities. Baby Soundabout sessions are for babies and toddlers who have sensory disabilities (for example, sight problems / blindness or hearing loss), physical disabilities and/or autism or mental health problems. This is a very difficult time for families who may not be able to communicate with their children and need to learn how to interact with them and understand their needs, difficulties and wishes.

For most children, singing, dancing and music are some of the earliest ways in which they express themselves, have fun and learn to interact with other children. Profoundly disabled children with physical, sensory and/or learning disabilities are usually denied this joyous experience because their disabilities make it impossible for them to take part in usual childhood activities. They can remain locked in a silent, static world, isolated and under stimulated.

Through Baby Soundabout, we have developed a successful way of interacting with even the smallest children with profound physical and learning disabilities and their parents or other caregivers. Our methods build upon the early child-caregiver relationship by using simple musical ideas as a common motivating thread, building upon the tiniest responses from the babies, who discover that their smallest reactions and responses are acknowledged and make something happen.

“A fantastic easy time, lots of fun and lots of ideas for us to do at home”

“Lovely session which A [my baby] found really exciting, she enjoyed interacting and I like meeting other parents with similar experiences and problems”
