Inclusive Choir – Oxford Youth

A musical community without barriers!

The Oxford Youth Soundabout Inclusive Choir, in partnership with the Oxfordshire County Music Service, welcomes people of all abilities aged under 25, and their families.

The choir celebrates that everyone has their own way of sharing their voice. Here are a few examples of ways you could join in:

  • Using Makaton Signing
  • Singing or vocalisations
  • Making sounds with an instrument or sound maker
  • Using technology e.g. an iPad or EyeGaze
  • Movement and dance

By welcoming all voices we aim to be as inclusive as possible, and actively try to remove barriers to participation from those with severe and profound learning disabilities.

The choir sings songs chosen by members and occasionally writes their own songs. Every piece of music is designed so that members can be involved in their own way.

Get Involved!

The choir is free to join, there are no auditions, and you do not need to be able to read music notation.

The choir meets on Zoom on alternate Saturdays at 3.30pm-4:30pm.

We will have our face-to-face sessions at The Oxfordshire Centre for Music in Bayswater Road, Oxford. You can check the schedule to know when the next one is.

Face to face not for you? Not to worry – we will be running these in in a hybrid was so you can still join online via zoom.

Meet the choir leader

Ellen is studying towards a masters in music at Oxford University. Since being a member of the National Open Youth Orchestra, she has had a passion for inclusivity in music & enjoys volunteering with community music groups in Oxford. Some of these include leading singing workshops in prisons, playing in hospitals & creating songs with people with dementia. She started volunteering with Soundabout Inclusive Choir in 2020 and loves the charity & its values. Ellen became an intern later in the year and particularly enjoys working with the emerging leaders in mentoring sessions!
