Christ Church Cathedral School Launches Partnership With Soundabout
Christ Church Cathedral School today announced their support of Didcot-based charity Soundabout, who use music to unlock the potential of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, for the coming academic year.
Launching the alongside charity CEO Clare Cook and music practitioner Sue Simmonds were John and Sarah Hall, whose profoundly disabled son Thomas was the inspiration for them forming the charity. Another of their sons James, was a former chorister at the school.
Soundabout was set up Oxford in 1995 to empower school staff to make music interactively with their pupils with severe and complex disabilities, led by practitioner Ann Brown. The enthusiastic response to this project by both pupils and school staff resulted in the founders setting up a permanent training programme in schools across the UK. In December 1997 Soundabout was officially founded as an independent charity and has expanded to also run community music-making sessions in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
The school will be raising funds to enable the charity to launch and run an inclusive choir for people of all abilities in Oxford in 2019.
Ellis Lloyd Payne, Chair of the Parents Association said: “The PTA love the positive links between Soundabout and CCCS and are looking forward to supporting collaborations throughout the year, starting off with a Soundabout presence at our Annual Punch Party on December 15th.”
Richard Murray, Headmaster of Christ Church Cathedral School, said: “We are delighted to support Soundabout’s inspiring work bringing music to those with severe learning disabilities. For a school where music is fundamental to its way of life, it is lovely to see yet more ways in which music’s power to transform is made manifest. We will enjoy very much supporting this vital work both financially and practically. Let us hope this can become a long-term relationship.”
At the charity, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to benefit from the life-changing power of music, and it is wonderful to be partnering with an organisation which shares these values. An exciting year of fundraising. Clare Cook, CEO of Soundabout
