Soundabout Presents to Students at Royal College of Music
Earlier this month Soundabout Practitioner, Emily Tully, visited the Royal College of Music in London. Emily joined two other guest speakers to talk with 75 second year undergraduate students for an event called “Current Debates in Music Education – Inclusive Practice in Music Education”.
The session looked at inclusive practice and how this can shape a landscape where everyone can access and enjoy music. Stuart Whatmore, Head of Tri-Borough Music, began the session by taking the students through the set up and role of music hubs, music in schools, and the current challenges and opportunities in equitable provision. Emily presented about Soundabout’s approach to working alongside Learning Disabled children and adults, exploring personal / social outcomes and the impact of the work, and practical strategies for the students to begin their journeys in this area. Finally Natasha Hendry, presented about music, wellbeing, and social justice in music education. The trio then ran a question and answer session for the students.
Emily’s presentation and contributions during the panel discussion gave students an introduction to Soundabout. We hope it sparked an interest for those looking to use their musical skills to support others and that it demonstrated the breadth of career pathways out there! We hope to welcome students to our recently launched volunteering programme to build on the experience and learn first hand!
Emily looks forward to returning to the Royal College of Music in February to repeat this session to a further 75 students!
