Sound Practice For Families and Primary Carers

‘You work with my son’s abilities and make that the centre of your interactions. His sounds and vocalisations being the main part of a song in the group makes him feel heard. This is how he communicates and it’s so meaningful. I have learnt a lot too and we continue this at home when we leave. I even discovered what instruments he likes from this group and bought the exact same one for home so we can communicate using those and the things I have seen here.’

You don’t need to be a musician to bring music and sound into your daily life or home-schooling activities. We’re always inspired to hear the many ways our families do this, building on what they’ve experienced in Soundabout sessions.

Sound Practice has been designed to support and build on this. It will help you to grow in confidence and understanding, to use music and sound to enhance how you communicate and interact outside of Soundabout sessions.

Through Sound Practice, you will be supported to:

  • Build your confidence in ‘commusicating’ and creating meaningful one-to-one musical interactions.
  • Discover low-cost, low-resource ways to connect through sound using voice, body, instruments, sound-makers, and sensory resources.
  • Learn simple, practical techniques you can use in any setting to deepen engagement, and how you can adapt these in the moment.
  • Shape and tailor activities to suit different age groups, including Early Years, children and young people, and adults.

‘I don’t think I’ve ever known her better … Music has brought us much, much closer together. She’s non-verbal, so she doesn’t talk, but just to hear her voice, I really can recognise her happy noises now – she does this little cluck … Now she makes lots of different noises that she never did before, and I think it’s given her confidence to make the noises; she’s exploring more with her vocal cords.’

Whether you’re just starting to explore music and sound at home, or looking to build on what you already do, Sound Practice will offer a welcoming and supportive space for you to learn and grow.
