Sound Practice for Music Facilitators and Therapists

‘I found Soundabout whilst trawling the internet for resources and ideas to help me deliver music sessions in an SEMH school. I have since attended numerous courses online and face to face. Soundabout training has helped me understand how to meet Young People and adults with learning disabilities at their level, provide meaningful opportunities to express themselves and communicate and make every session inclusive and relevant to every participant. I also really like their playful approach to music making, keeping activities child focused and adapting to new ideas in the moment. If you want a toolbelt of new ideas that really work and techniques to engage all the senses through music I’d highly recommend Soundabouts Sound Practice Training.’

Soundabout Practitioner and SEND Music Facilitator

As a freelance or student music facilitator or therapist, we understand that finding regular opportunities for professional development can be challenging, and that it can be common to feel like you’re working in isolation. Sound Practice offers a chance to develop new skills or strengthen your existing practice in inclusive music-making, within a supportive and collaborative environment.

The programme will provide space to reflect, connect, and network, and to learn from and share with other facilitators and professionals, so that you can continue to grow your skills, confidence, and the impact you make in your work and career.

Through Sound Practice, you will be supported to:

  • Widen your knowledge of simple, practical techniques you can use in any setting, and how you can adapt these in the moment, ensuring they remain inclusive, responsive, and person-centred.
  • Shape and tailor activities to suit a range of settings, age groups, and individual needs.
  • Develop your understanding of how music and sound can be used to support learning and development, communication and self-expression, health and wellbeing, and enjoyment.
  • Expand your understanding of the different ways to connect through music and sound, using voice, body, instruments, sound-makers, and sensory resources, while building a practical toolkit of accessible starting points and activities.
  • Grow your confidence in delivering multi-sensory music and sound-making activities, with an understanding of key considerations when working with sensory differences and impairments.
  • Develop skills in creating nature-based or nature-inspired music and sound-making experiences, and how this can link to Forest School practice.

‘The training I have received as a Soundabout practitioner about ‘commusication’ has impacted all of my practice, across community music, music therapy and music teaching. The playful, “can do” approach has made my practice more inclusive, flexible and responsive. I would recommend this training to anyone who wants to use music and sound to build connections with people.’

‘As a specialist music teacher in a SEND school, I often felt isolated in my practice. When I discovered Soundabout, I felt I had found my people. I was inspired by practitioners who shared the same passion for using music as a tool for communication and connection, and I finally had a space to learn, discuss ideas, reflect, and develop alongside others. Many of the principles I learned then are still embedded in my everyday practice today.’

‘The dedicated training days have helped develop specific skills, reflect on my practice, and learn from colleagues across the network. What makes the training particularly valuable is the sense of community. It’s not just about learning new techniques; it’s about sharing experiences, being inspired by others, and not always working alone.’

‘The training has had a significant impact on both my Soundabout work and my wider professional practice, strengthening my confidence and deepening my understanding of musical communication. I would highly recommend Soundabout training to anyone working with people with learning disabilities and complex needs. Whether you’re new to the field or experienced, the training offers practical skills, fresh perspectives, and a supportive community that helps you grow as a practitioner.’
