Whether you’re a specialist music teacher looking to deepen your expertise, or a non-music teacher keen to bring music and sound into your school and classroom, Sound Practice is designed to support you.

The programme will help you start, develop, or refine your skills in using music and sound-based approaches with SEND pupils, in both mainstream and specialist school settings.

Through Sound Practice, you will be supported to:

  • Develop your understanding of how music and sound can be used in the school and classroom to support learning and development, communication and self-expression, health and wellbeing, and enjoyment.
  • Build your confidence in using simple music and sound-based activities and techniques, whether you are new to this approach or looking to extend what you already do.
  • Explore different ways to connect through music and sound, using voice, body, instruments, sound-makers, and sensory resources, while building a practical toolkit of accessible starting points and activities.
  • Learn how to adapt activities in the moment, ensuring they remain inclusive, responsive, and pupil-centred.
  • Tailor approaches to suit a range of settings, age groups, and individual needs.
  • Grow your confidence in delivering multi-sensory music and sound-making activities, with an understanding of key considerations when working with sensory differences and impairments.
  • Develop skills in creating nature-based or nature-inspired music and sound-making experiences, and how this can link to Forest School practice.

‘I decided to take part in the Soundabout training because I wanted to develop new ways of engaging pupils with complex needs through music and communication. The modeling sessions and inset training sessions have given me practical, creative strategies that I can use every day in the classroom, and it has increased my confidence in using music as a tool to support learning, interaction, and emotional wellbeing.

I’ve already seen positive changes in pupil engagement and participation, with pupils responding in ways that demonstrate increased confidence, communication, and enjoyment. The training has encouraged me to think differently about inclusive practice and has provided ideas that I know will continue to benefit both current and future pupils.

I would highly recommend the Soundabout training to other school staff. It is inspiring, accessible, and full of practical ideas that can be implemented immediately. Whether you have a musical background or not, the course equips you with the skills and confidence to make meaningful connections with pupils through music. It’s been an incredibly worthwhile professional development opportunity and one that has had a lasting impact on my practice’.
