Inclusive Choir – Wiltshire

New Inclusive Choir for Wiltshire Youth

On Sunday August 2 2020, the national charity Soundabout and Wiltshire Music Connect launched a brand new inclusive choir for children and young people across the county.

The Soundabout Inclusive Choir for Wiltshire Youth will welcome young people of all abilities up to the age of 18 and is focussed on removing barriers from those with severe and profound learning disabilities being able to participate musically.

The choir will meet and sing together every two weeks via an online video-conferencing platform and aims to also rehearse regularly in person from early 2021.

Soundabout, which uses music to unlock the potential of people with severe and profound learning disabilities, also runs a choir in Oxfordshire and online, which was recently the subject of a report by Fergal Keane on the the BBC’s national News at Six and Ten.

They will also be launching an inclusive choir in Bristol in September.

Clare Cook, CEO, Soundabout:

“Our experience in Oxford has shown us the powerful impact that an inclusive choir has on all involved – creating a musical community around children and young people with disabilities builds confidence in their own musicality and ability to form relationships. Some of the members will be singers, others may use technology or traditional instruments to make their contribution – all are welcome. Our team is aspirational in our approach and we are always looking to create exciting opportunities for leadership and performance within the choir.”

Ruth Jones, Development Manager, Wiltshire Music Connect:

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Soundabout to bring this inclusive choir opportunity to children and young people in Wiltshire. We are really looking forward to seeing how all our young singers and their families will progress on their journey from joining online singing to getting together in person – and then on to performance! We’re running a campaign called #DontDropMusic to raise awareness of young people’s music making during the pandemic and Soundabout choirs are a fantastic example of how you can sing together wherever you are”
